The Adirondacks

The Adirondacks

The Adirondack Park is one of the largest protected areas in the United States at over 6 million acres of both public forever wild land and private land and is heaven on earth for those who want to live in the wild, green embrace of forest-clad mountains, clear lakes, and dense woods.

The Mountains

The Adirondack Mountains that tower above the rest of New York is a reminder of the ancient rocks, sand, and glaciers that carved the landscape of the region. Rising in northeastern New York State, the mountains span 160 miles and form a dome with over 100 peaks. Peaks vary in height from 1,200 to over 5,000 feet. 46 of the highest summits go above 4,000 feet and are collectively known as “The High Peaks.” The tallest of these is Mount Marcy, which rises 5,344 feet above sea level, and which harbors Lake Tear of the Clouds, which at 4,292 feet is the highest lake in the state. Here you’ll find over 2,000 miles of the most stunning hiking trails in the Northeast. Walking sunlight under soaring canopies, experience the majesty of roaring waterfalls, and climb summits that offer endless views of the Adirondacks. The region’s topography and lake effects also create the ideal conditions for snow production, making the area’s ski mountains a popular destination for skiing enthusiasts.

The Park

Created in 1892 by New York State, Adirondack Park features scenic waterways, majestic mountains, and boreal forests that will simply take your breath away. It encompasses over 6 million acres and is composed of both private and publicly owned land. It is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with over 30,000 miles of streams and rivers, 3,000 lakes, and 42 mountain peaks that rise above 4,000 feet. Its “Forever Wild” status protects its forest preserve from logging and maintains its areas for recreational purposes. Here you’ll find a network of hiking trails, including ones that lead to the High Peaks. You can also camp out and sleep under the stars. The park offers countless private and publicly owned campsites and campgrounds that feature family-friendly amenities. Other activities to be enjoyed in the mountains include biking, skiing, hunting, and fishing.
